Understanding Running Pace: What the Numbers Actually Mean

Pace is one of the most-watched numbers during a run, but understanding what it actually measures — and how to use it deliberately — turns it from a number you glance at into a genuinely useful training tool.
Pace vs speed: same idea, different framing
Pace (typically expressed as minutes per kilometre or mile) is the inverse of speed — rather than "how far in an hour," pace asks "how long does one unit of distance take." Runners generally find pace more intuitive for training purposes, since most running goals are naturally framed around distance (a 5K, a 10K) rather than duration.
Why pace naturally varies through a run
Very few runs have perfectly even pace throughout — hills, fatigue, warm-up effects, and simply human variability all cause natural pace fluctuation. Running the second half of a race or long run slightly faster than the first half — a "negative split" — is a commonly recommended pacing strategy, since starting conservatively and having energy in reserve for a stronger finish tends to produce better overall results than starting too fast and fading toward the end.
