Every run tracker shows an estimated calorie burn, and it's worth understanding both how that number is calculated and why it should be treated as a reasonable estimate rather than an exact, precise figure.
The basic calculation approach
Calorie burn estimates during running are typically calculated using factors including distance, duration, pace, and personal details like body weight — heavier individuals and faster paces both generally increase estimated calorie burn for a given distance, reflecting the greater physical work involved.
Why these are estimates, not precise measurements
True calorie expenditure depends on many individual factors that a phone or watch can't directly measure — actual metabolic rate, running efficiency, terrain, wind resistance, and individual physiological differences all affect real energy expenditure, but most consumer tracking calculations rely on standardised formulas based on more general factors like weight, pace, and distance.
Why different apps can show different numbers for the same run
