QR Code Not Scanning? 8 Common Fixes
Practical troubleshooting steps for when a QR code won't scan — lighting, focus, screen glare, damaged codes and more.
A QR code that refuses to scan is almost always a fixable, physical-world problem — not a broken app. Here are the most common causes, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the culprit.
1. Poor lighting
QR scanners rely on clear contrast between the black and white sections of the code. Dim lighting, harsh shadows across the code, or scanning directly under a flickering light can all cause a scan to fail or take much longer than expected. Try moving to better, more even lighting, or shading the code from a harsh direct glare.
2. Screen glare (for digital codes)
If you're scanning a code displayed on another screen — a ticket, a boarding pass — glare and reflection are one of the most common failure points. Tilt the source screen slightly, increase its brightness, or move away from direct light sources reflecting off it.
3. Camera too close or too far
Every QR code has an effective scanning distance range based on its printed or displayed size. Too close, and the camera can't fit the whole code in frame; too far, and there isn't enough resolution to read the fine detail. Slowly move the camera back and forth to find the sweet spot rather than holding it at a fixed distance.
4. Dirty or scratched camera lens
An easy one to overlook — a smudged phone camera lens (common if your phone lives in a pocket or bag) can blur a scan significantly. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth before assuming the code itself is the problem.
5. Damaged or low-quality printed code
QR codes have built-in error correction, but there's a limit — a heavily torn, faded, or low-resolution printed code can exceed what error correction can recover from. If a printed code consistently fails across multiple devices, the print itself is likely the issue, not your scanner.
6. Code printed too small
A QR code needs to be large enough, relative to its data complexity, to scan reliably at a typical distance. A URL-only code can be small; a code with a lot of embedded data (like a detailed contact card) needs more physical size to remain scannable.
7. Missing "quiet zone" around the code
QR codes need a small margin of blank space around them to scan reliably — a code cropped tightly right up to its edges, with no surrounding whitespace, can confuse a scanner's ability to detect its boundaries.
8. Outdated or restrictive scanner app
Some older or more limited scanner apps struggle with certain QR code versions or error-correction levels. If a code fails consistently on one app but scans fine on another, it's worth switching to a more capable, regularly maintained scanner.
A quick checklist before giving up
Good lighting, a clean lens, the right distance, and a code that isn't damaged or cropped covers the overwhelming majority of scan failures. If all of that checks out and it still won't scan, the code itself may simply have been generated incorrectly.
