The History of QR Codes: From Factory Floors to Restaurant Tables

A short history of how QR codes were invented for the automotive industry and became a global everyday tool decades later.

QR codes feel like a product of the smartphone era, but they're considerably older than the phones that made them ubiquitous — and they weren't invented for marketing or menus at all.

Invented for car parts, not phones

QR codes were developed in 1994 by Masahiro Hara, an engineer at Denso Wave, a subsidiary of the Japanese automotive company Denso. The problem they were solving was purely industrial: traditional barcodes on automotive parts could only hold a small amount of data and had to be scanned repeatedly — sometimes ten or more scans per box — to capture all the necessary information for inventory and manufacturing tracking. A single code that could hold far more data, and be read quickly from any angle, would save significant time on the factory floor.

Why the two-dimensional grid design won

Hara's team reportedly drew inspiration from the pattern of a Go board (the black-and-white grid strategy game) while designing a format that could be read in any orientation, not just left to right. The result — QR, short for "Quick Response" — was built specifically to be fast to scan, which remains the format's defining advantage over older barcode types even today.

An unusually open technology

Denso Wave made a decision that significantly shaped QR codes' future adoption: rather than tightly restricting the format, the company chose not to exercise its patent rights for standard QR code use, making the format effectively free for anyone to use. This openness is a major reason QR codes became a universal standard rather than staying a proprietary industrial tool restricted to one company's supply chain.

From factories to phones — but not immediately

For years after their invention, QR codes remained mostly an industrial and logistics tool. Their consumer breakthrough took much longer, arriving only once smartphones with capable cameras became widespread enough that scanning a code no longer required specialised hardware — early consumer QR use in Japan through the 2000s eventually expanded globally as smartphone adoption grew.

The pandemic-era surge

QR code use saw a dramatic global surge during the COVID-19 pandemic, largely driven by contactless needs — digital restaurant menus replacing shared printed ones, contact-tracing check-ins, and touchless payment systems all leaned heavily on QR codes as a low-cost, no-contact solution. Much of this usage has stuck around well beyond the pandemic itself, cementing QR codes as a default tool rather than a temporary workaround.

Where QR codes are headed

Beyond menus and payments, QR codes continue expanding into areas like product authentication, detailed packaging information (ingredients, sourcing), augmented reality triggers, and increasingly sophisticated ticketing and identity-verification systems — three decades after solving a fairly narrow automotive inventory problem.
