How Image Compression Actually Works

Compressing a photo feels like magic — the same picture, but a fraction of the file size — but it's a well-understood, deliberate trade-off between file size and image detail, not a free lunch.

Lossy vs lossless compression

Lossless compression reduces file size without discarding any actual image data — it finds more efficient ways to store the exact same information, similar in principle to zipping a file. File size reduction is real but limited, since no visual detail is sacrificed.

Lossy compression — the method most photo compressors use, including for common formats like JPEG — actually discards some image information, chosen specifically because it's less noticeable to the human eye, in exchange for dramatically smaller file sizes than lossless methods can achieve.

Why lossy compression can look nearly identical at moderate settings

Human vision is more sensitive to some kinds of detail (sharp edges, brightness changes) than others (subtle colour variation in a busy area of an image) — lossy compression algorithms are built around this, discarding disproportionately more of the less-noticeable detail, which is why a well-compressed photo at a moderate setting can look nearly identical to the original despite a significantly smaller file size.

Why compression has a breaking point

Push compression too aggressively, and the algorithm starts discarding detail that is noticeable — visible blocky artifacts, blurring, or colour banding. This is the visible trade-off point where file size savings start costing real, perceptible image quality.

Resolution vs compression: two different levers

Reducing an image's actual pixel dimensions (resolution) is a separate way to reduce file size, distinct from compression quality settings — a 4000×3000 pixel photo compressed heavily is different from a 1200×900 pixel photo compressed lightly, even if they land at a similar final file size. For most everyday sharing (social media, messaging, email), reducing resolution to something reasonable for how the image will actually be viewed often preserves visual quality better than aggressive compression alone.

A practical approach to compressing well

  1. Reduce resolution first to a size appropriate for how the image will be viewed or displayed.
  2. Apply moderate, not maximum, compression — check the result visually rather than assuming lower is always better.
  3. Compare before and after at actual viewing size, not zoomed in, since that's how the image will realistically be seen.

Why this matters practically

Understanding this trade-off means you can compress deliberately — pushing file size down as far as it'll go before quality noticeably suffers for your specific use case — rather than guessing at a single "safe" setting for every situation.
