Common Photo Resizing Mistakes to Avoid
Frequent mistakes people make when resizing and compressing photos, and practical ways to avoid each one.
Resizing and compressing photos seems simple, but a handful of avoidable mistakes show up constantly — worth knowing in advance so you don't have to learn them the hard way.
1. Enlarging a photo beyond its original resolution
Stretching a smaller photo up to a larger size doesn't add real detail — it just spreads existing pixels further apart, producing a soft, blurry result. If a photo needs to be genuinely larger for its intended use, this needs to be solved at the source (a higher-resolution original), not fixed after the fact by enlarging a smaller file.
2. Over-compressing for the intended use
Applying aggressive compression appropriate for a quick, casual message to a photo meant for print or professional use produces visible quality loss exactly where it matters most — matching compression aggressiveness to actual intended use (see our compression article) avoids this mismatch.
3. Losing track of the original file
Repeatedly compressing an already-compressed file, rather than always starting from an original, compounds quality loss with each cycle (generation loss, covered in our social media sizing article) — always keep an original, uncompressed copy safely stored before working from it.
4. Ignoring aspect ratio when resizing
Resizing a photo's width and height independently, without maintaining its original proportions, produces a visibly stretched or squashed result — most resizing tools offer a "lock aspect ratio" option specifically to prevent this, worth using by default unless a specific non-proportional resize is genuinely intended.
5. Not checking the result at actual viewing size

6. Cropping before checking if you'll need the full frame later
