How to Send the First Message to Someone You Like
Practical advice and message examples for starting a conversation with someone you're interested in, without overthinking it.
The first message to someone you're interested in carries a disproportionate amount of pressure for how little it usually needs to say. Most people overthink this step far more than the other person will ever notice — the goal of a first message isn't to be perfect, it's just to open a natural conversation.
What actually works
- Reference something specific, not a generic opener. "Hey" alone puts all the effort of continuing the conversation on the other person. Referencing a shared context (a mutual friend, an event, something they posted or mentioned) gives them something easy to respond to.
- Ask a genuine, easy-to-answer question. Open-ended but low-effort questions ("what's been the best part of your week?") tend to get better responses than yes/no questions.
- Keep it short. A long first message can feel like too much too soon. One or two sentences is usually enough to start.
- Match their energy, not an idealised version of yourself. If your usual communication style is casual and funny, an overly formal first message will feel like a different person is talking once you actually meet or continue chatting.
Examples that work well
- "Hey — [mutual friend] mentioned you're into [shared interest] too. What got you into it?"
- "This might be random, but I've been meaning to say hi properly since [context]. How's your week going?"
- "Okay, I have to ask — [specific, genuine question related to something about them]."
What tends not to work
- Generic compliments with nothing else attached ("hey beautiful") — these read as low-effort and interchangeable with a message sent to anyone.
- Overly long introductions that read more like a cover letter than a conversation opener.
- Waiting for the "perfect" moment or message. A decent message sent is worth more than a perfect one that never gets sent.
After the first message: don't overanalyse the gap
Response times vary for completely ordinary reasons — being busy, not checking phones constantly, or just not being an instant-reply person. Reading too much into timing before you actually know someone's communication habits tends to create anxiety that has nothing to do with actual interest level.
Building from there
Once a conversation is genuinely flowing, let the tone follow naturally rather than forcing depth or romance too early. Most successful early conversations move from a specific shared reference, to genuine questions, to a natural, unforced back-and-forth — rushing this sequence is one of the more common reasons early conversations fizzle out.
