A Practical Power Outage Preparedness Checklist
A practical, realistic checklist for preparing for power outages, covering light, communication, food and basic comfort.
Power outages range from a brief few minutes to multi-day events, and being reasonably prepared for the longer end of that range makes even a short outage far less stressful when it happens.
Light
- Your phone's flashlight app, ready to go with no setup needed in the moment.
- A dedicated battery-powered torch or lantern as backup, stored somewhere you can find it in the dark.
- Spare batteries for that backup light, checked periodically so you're not caught with dead spares.
Power and communication
- A charged portable power bank, kept charged even when not in active use — not something to discover is flat exactly when you need it.
- Your phone charged before any known likely outage (storm warnings, scheduled maintenance notices).
- A backup way to charge, such as a car charger, if an outage runs long.
Food and water
- A few days of non-perishable food that doesn't need cooking or refrigeration.
- Bottled water, enough for at least a day or two per person in your household.
- A manual can opener — an easy thing to forget until you're stuck with only canned food and no way to open it.
Comfort and basic needs
- Warm blankets if an outage might affect heating.
- A basic first aid kit, checked periodically for anything expired or missing.
- Any essential medications, with a few days' buffer supply where possible.
Information
- A battery-powered or hand-crank radio, or confirming your phone can still receive emergency alerts on low battery/data.
- Knowing your utility provider's outage reporting number or app, saved somewhere accessible even without data.
A simple habit: review twice a year
Batteries drain, food expires, and household needs change — a twice-yearly review (many people tie this to clock changes or a seasonal reminder) keeps a preparedness kit actually ready rather than theoretically ready.
Keep it realistic, not elaborate
A kit that's simple enough to actually assemble and maintain beats an ambitious one that never gets finished — start with light, power, food, and water, then build out from there as it becomes routine.
