Common Mistakes English Speakers Make Learning Marathi
Frequent mistakes English speakers make learning Marathi, and practical ways to avoid them.
Marathi's script, grammar, and its close-but-distinct relationship to Hindi create some specific, recurring challenges for English-speaking learners — worth knowing in advance.
1. Assuming Hindi vocabulary transfers directly
As covered in more detail in our Marathi vs Hindi article, this is by far the most common mistake for learners with some prior Hindi exposure — sharing Devanagari script is not the same as sharing vocabulary, and assuming direct equivalence leads to frequent, genuine misunderstanding.
2. Underestimating gender's effect on verbs
As covered in our translation mistakes article, Marathi grammatical gender extends to affecting verb forms based on the subject's gender, a feature that goes further than in some related languages — skipping this creates real errors in sentence construction, not just vocabulary mismatches.
3. Applying English word order habits
Marathi generally follows a subject-object-verb order, the reverse of English's typical pattern — learners often instinctively default to English-like ordering, which doesn't match natural Marathi sentence construction.
4. Relying on transliteration instead of Devanagari script
Leaning on Roman-letter transliteration rather than learning to read actual Devanagari script caps how far real reading ability can develop — genuinely necessary for engaging with Marathi's substantial literary and theatre tradition (see our related culture article).
5. Underestimating respect and formality conventions
Marathi has forms and phrasing that convey respect, particularly toward elders, that don't have a clean one-to-one English grammatical equivalent — treating formality as optional misses real social nuance important in everyday interaction.
6. Overusing "very" instead of a stronger word
As with several other South Asian English usage patterns, Marathi speakers writing in English sometimes reach for very + a basic adjective where a native English speaker would use a single, stronger word instead.
The underlying fix
Most of these mistakes come from either assuming Hindi knowledge substitutes for genuine Marathi study, or underestimating Marathi's own specific grammatical features — gender-verb interaction, word order, formality — that require dedicated, deliberate attention.
